WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Anyone interested in working on a fireworks display crew. For those who are seeking a PGI Certification as a Fireworks Display Operator. Anyone who needs a safety course for a Fireworks Display Operator License (required in Colorado); persons in regulatory capacities; and those interested in expanding their hobby fireworks knowledge.
Registrants must be 18 years of age in order to either receive the safety certification or participate in the hands-on practical portion of the class. Minors shall be permitted to attend this course in conjunction with a participating adult.
ABOUT THE TEACHERS: Nick Rinaldo is a volunteer for the Pyrotechnics Guild International (PGI) as Certified Instructor for the Display Operator Certification Course. Nick Rinaldo is also the Director of Education for The Rocky Mountain Pyrotechnics Guild (RMPG) and Co-Director of Training Programs for the PGI. Additionally, we have input and assistance by Byron Nelson and other RMPG assistants. Byron Nelson is also the Safety Director of RMPG providing decades of experience and guidance.
RMPG: Is a 501c3 non-profit club incorporated in the State of Colorado for the purpose of encouraging the safe and artistic use of fireworks through education and shared expertise.
WHAT THE STUDENTS RECEIVE: Each participant will receive the: 319 page 2022 edition of the PGI Display Fireworks Operator Certification Study Guide. An interactive classroom style lecture, written testing, field instruction, live fire demonstrations, and hands-on field experience. All accompanied by a certificate verifying attendance / successful completion of the safety course. A basic cold lunch of deli meat sandwiches and chips, and assorted beverages will be provided to attendees. Apologies as we can’t accommodate dietary restrictions.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSING: The Colorado State Licensing process requires an application form (available via the state website), safety course (this RMPG/PGI DOC course qualifies), passing an exam on the NFPA 1123 - 2018 edition, Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) background check, proof of residency, and a state fee. Note: the state application form requires proof of assisting in five fireworks displays. Greater details will be explained during the class. PGI Operator’s Certification application form is included at the back of the book.
WHAT THE STUDENT SHOULD BRING: Each participant must bring safety glasses, a head covering or hard hat, hearing protection, and wear cotton clothing with long sleeves and long pants (turnout gear is acceptable). Flame retardant layers and boots are recommended for the outdoor portion of the class. Hot, cold, wet, windy weather and/or muddy ground is always possible in Colorado, so be prepared. It is highly recommended to bring a pen, pencil, clip board or other hard surface to write on, highlighter, and paper for taking notes as we typically don’t have tables. A water bottle and anything else you feel you might need to be comfortable is advisable. We will be in a barn and outside.
